Health P.E.I. CEO says he is resigning because he wants to strike a better work-life balance

“None have been more rewarding or humbling than the time that I have spent in health as both deputy minister and, most recently, as CEO of Health P.E.I. I am confident that P.E.I.’s health-care system stands on strong footing because of the dedication, passion and commitment of our physicians, nurses and front-line staff. Islanders should take comfort in that.” Michael Mayne

Michael Mayne is packing it in at Health P.E.I., the board of directors announced Monday.

The CEO will leave in October to focus on his family and pursue personal and professional interests.

“After 15 years of public service in senior positions with the federal and provincial governments, and with the support of my family, I have decided that it is time for a change,” Mayne in a news release.

“This decision does not come lightly and is entirely a personal one. With a young and busy family, it is important to me that I strike a better work-life balance and spend more time with them.”

The Health P.E.I. board will immediately begin the recruitment process for a new CEO.

Since 2011, Mayne has held senior roles in the Island’s health-care system, serving as deputy minister of the Department of Health and Wellness from 2011-2016 and CEO of Health P.E.I. since April 2016.

Mayne said public service has been a fulfilling experience and feels privileged to have been afforded the opportunity to serve in several roles during his career.

Islanders should take comfort in that.”

Health P.E.I. board chairwoman Phyllis Horne said Mayne has shown strong leadership in his role as CEO.

Health and Wellness Minister Robert Henderson said through Mayne’s leadership the Island has made significant improvements in providing quality care that is focused on better health outcomes of Islanders.

“I want to thank him for his hard work and dedication,” said Henderson.

Premier Wade MacLauchlan said Mayne has been a tremendous asset for Health P.E.I. and the health-care system.
