Striving to get better

Wild head coach Dunn guest coach at Hockey Canada under-17 camp

Kyle Dunn recently gained some invaluable experience in Calgary.

The head coach of the Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild attended Hockey Canada’s under-17 camp as a guest coach.

“I got to see a lot of great hockey players, and it was a great experience with all the best coaches around Canada,” said Dunn, a Charlottetown native. “You are always learning something every day, and picking people’s brains. It’s always nice to come home and apply those tactics to your coaching style.”

When asked if there is anything in particular he learned from his time at the Hockey Canada camp, Dunn replied: “One of the big things I learned is that we are not reinventing the wheel. Hockey is hockey no matter at what level.

“Although it was the national under-17 team, the best players in Canada, we are teaching the same things in skill development and everything here in Prince Edward Island. It’s good to know you are on the same page as those guys.

“Obviously those guys are doing it at a higher level and it is a full-time gig for them, but it’s good to know you are on the same page as them.”

Dunn, who is looking forward to applying what he learned at the camp with the Wild for the 2017-18 New Brunswick/P.E.I. Major Midget Hockey League season, is also the head coach of the P.E.I. male hockey team for the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alta. He noted a two-year process has been laid out for development and selection of Team P.E.I.

Like players, coaches are constantly striving to get better, noted Dunn.

“Coaching is evolving every day,” continued Dunn. “If you are not learning, you are not improving.”
