Linda Libby, meteorologist with Environment Canada
I have only looked at “The Old Farmer’s Almanac” a couple of times, but any publication that has been around since 1792 is certainly meeting the needs of its purchaser. It has been providing information on a variety of subjects before there were official sources available. The collection of weather data and forecasting is a youngster in comparison to “The Old Farmer’s Almanac.”
I think the goal of the almanac is very similar to the Canada’s Meteorological Service of Canada. Both organizations work to provide information that Canadians can use to their benefit whether that in their safety or work-life situations. Canadians are able to use the information to make their daily life better such as having an umbrella handy for rainy days or preparing for the various types of storms that can strike our region. The “Old Farmer’s Almanac” is one of many sources of weather information available. Being aware and prepared can mitigate some of the serious impacts of severe weather.
With hurricane season near its peak and winter storm looming in the coming months, Islanders should review their emergency plans and material.
In an emergency, Canadians should be prepared to take care of yourself and your family for 72 hours. Information on becoming prepared can be found at: http://www. getprepared.gc.ca/index-en. aspx .
