JEERS: To another golfing season coming to an end across Prince Edward Island. Many courses closed over the past 2-3 weeks and more shut down over the weekend, narrowing the choices for die-hard golfers anxious to get in that last round before the snow flies. Spectacular fall weather has kept many golfers in action. And CHEERS to all Island courses that were in great shape all year and which enjoyed another busy season.
CHEERS: To the legacy of long-time Guardian letter writer Henry MacDougall of St. Peter’s Bay whose funeral was held Sunday afternoon. Mr. MacDougall, who died Wednesday at age 96, had strong opinions on politics, religion and various current events across the province, and he had no hesitation putting pen to paper to provide his views on those topics and subjects for more than 60 years. He kept writing letters until just a few weeks ago from Colville Manor in Souris. In one of his last submissions to The Guardian, he offered congratulations to P.E.I.’s Lt.-Gov. Antoinette Perry.
CHEERS: To the 34th annual Curl for Cancer event, which will be held Nov. 18 at the Charlottetown Curling Complex. Entry fee is $20 per player and each team will play one, six-end game on Saturday. Other events that Saturday include a bake sale, trivia at 3 p.m. and live charity auction at 5 p.m. Lisa Jackson is again chairing the event and she can be reached at 316-0449 to register, or contact the curling club.
CHEERS: To the Twitter employee who pulled U.S. President Donald Trump’s twitter feed on Thursday. In a tweet from Twitter’s government handle, the social media site said an investigation revealed a customer support employee pulled the president’s account on the employee’s last day on the job. On one hand, we realize it does create security concerns that one person could take down the twitter feed of the U.S. president. However, on the other hand, for 11 minutes the world was spared the nonsense spewing out of @realdonaldtrump. The blue, “Sorry, that page doesn’t exist” may be the most welcomed message on that account since Mr. Trump was elected.
JEERS: To vandals whose criminal activities kept RCMP members busy working across P.E.I. on Halloween night. The most serious were a number of suspected arsons that occurred in Prince County while police in Queens County and Kings County responded to a number of egg throwing and minor damage complaints, including at least 10 fire hydrants that were opened in Souris. While there were no injuries as a result of any of these fires, the structures and trailer involved were completely destroyed. It’s supposed to be a fun night for children and parents but these sorts of criminal actions ruin it for everyone.
CHEERS: To Sydney, Cape Breton, for its winning bid to host the 2019 Scotties Tournament of Hearts from Feb. 16-24 at Centre 200. It marks the return of the popular event to N.S. for the first time in 25 years.
