Panthers lose late

Cooper capitalize­s on turnover to propel defending national champs to 3-2 victory over Panthers

Former Charlottet­own Islanders forward Oliver Cooper scored the winner 7:25 into the third period Saturday as the UNB Varsity Reds defeated the UPEI Panthers 3-2.

UNB also received an even-strength goal from

Tyler Boland and a shorthande­d marker from

Dylan Wil- lick during the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) men’s hockey game at MacLauchla­n Arena. Morell’s Stephen Anderson, Tristan Pomerleau and Cam Brace had assists.

Kameron Kielly and Riley Whittingha­m replied for the host Panthers with Darcy Ashley recording the lone assist.

Alex Dubeau made 21 saves for the win while Matt Mahalak stopped 23 shots in the loss.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period and 2-2 heading to the third.

UPEI was 0-for-4 on power play while UNB 0-for-1.

The first-place Reds improved to 9-0-1 while the Panthers are 2-7-1 and tied with Dalhousie the was (2-6-1) for fifth in the seventeam conference.

The Panthers host Dalhousie Friday at 7 p.m.

Women’s hockey

Emerson Elliott scored 47 seconds into overtime Sunday as the St. FX X-Women defeated the UPEI Panthers 3-2 in in Antigonish, N.S. Kate

Gotaas and

Daley Oddy also scored for the host squad. Lindsey Donovan had two assists while singles went to Jenna MacDonald, Santana Gravelle, Nicole Corcoran and Kristen McKinley.

Sydnee Baker and Emma Weatherbie scored for UPEI. Assists went to Shelby Foran, Rachel Colle, Ashtyn Bartlett and Faith Steeves.

Carley Molnar stopped seven shots in the win while Camille Scherger made 34 saves in the loss.

All four goals in regulation came in the second period.

The X-Women improved to 7-1-1 while the Panthers are 2-5-2. UPEI travels to Halifax on Friday to play Dalhousie at 7 p.m. before hosting Moncton Saturday at 3 p.m.

Women’s basketball

Kiera Rigby had 19 points as the UPEI Panthers defeated the Saint Mary’s Huskies 58-46 Saturday in women’s basketball action in Halifax.

The Panthers outscored the Huskies 16-7 in both the second and fourth quarters en route to their first victory of the season.

The Panthers opened the season with a 60-52 loss

Rookie Reese Baxendale chipped in 10 points while Jane McLaughlin and Karla Yepez each added eight and Carolina Del Santo added 12 rebounds with six points, six steals and four blocks.

Shanieka Wood led the Huskies with 14 points while Cornwall’s Jada Yeo had two rebounds and an assist.

Saint Mary’s led 16-11 after the first quarter, but trailed 27-23 at the half and 42-39 heading to the fourth quarter. UPEI hosts UNB Friday at 6 p.m. in its home opener.

Men’s basketball

The Huskies got up by as many as 32 points and cruised to a 86-64 win over the Panthers Saturday in men’s basketball action.

The Huskies, quarter leads of 29-11, 46-20 and 67-41, swept the opening weekend matchup with the Panthers in Halifax. Nikita Kasongo had a game-high 21 points for Saint Mary’s while Kemar Alleyne and Osman Barrie each chipped in 14.

Milorad Sedlarevic had 16 points and nine rebounds to pace the Panthers while Stefan Vujisic had 11 and six.

UPEI shot better than Saint Mary’s but attempted 18 fewer shots. The Panthers also only hit 58 per cent from the line while the Huskies connected on 86 per cent of their free throws.
