Stallions on the move

-

The 2017 season was a breakout year for first crop sire Pang Shui.

The son of No Pan Intended had a small crop of 14 two-yearolds with 12 of them making the races and 10 of them garnering cheques in stakes races. The group was headlined by Charlottetown and Summerside track record-holder Sock It Away along with the very fast Tangled Mind and top stakes filly R Es Shabla. After standing at Meridian Farms in Milton for the 2015 season, when this year’s crop of two-year-old was conceived, owner Bill Andrew made the decision to take the stallion to western Canada where has stood the past two seasons. But after taking this year’s results into consideration, Pang Shui will return to Prince Edward Island for the 2018 breeding season where he will be sure to be busy.

Meridian Farms also sends along news of a new addition to their stallion ranks with Cartoon Daddy coming for his first season at stud on P.E.I. in 2018. The five-year-old son of Art Major has 19 lifetime wins, $460,618 in earnings and a mark of 1:50.1 over The Red Mile in Lexington, Ky. Andrew purchased the stallion for $11,500 at the recently held Blooded Horse Sale in Ohio. Cartoon Daddy’s dam is a three-quarter sister to $1.9-million earner, and former Gold Cup and Saucer finalist, Western Ace.

Pang Shui and Cartoon Daddy will join other pacing studs Westwardho Hanover and Cougar Hall at the standardbred nursery. Ameripan Gigolo is slated to leave P.E.I. for stallion duty in Manitoba after breeding 20 mares in the 2017 mating season. Ameripan Gigolo has been arguably the most consistent sire in Atlantic Canadian history with 163 starters from 200 horses eligible to race. Of those, 132 have won races and 100 of them have won in 2:00 flat or better for more than $5.5 million in earnings.

Meridian Farms also stands trot stallions Tad The Stud and Armbro Barrister.

Ohio Sale

Cartoon Daddy’s purchase was not the only action at the Ohio sale, as Andrew also purchased trot mare Hello Chipper for $5,500. The five-year-old

daughter of Chip Chip Hooray has eight wins and $48,380 in earnings along with a mark of 1:58.1 taken over Dayton, Ohio.

Gary McGuigan of Stratford purchased broodmare Miss Real Mayo with a $4,000 price tag on the 11-year-old daughter of Real Desire.

A number of Island-bred horses that have been racing in the U.S. also passed through the ring, all purchased by Americans. Ryans Allstar was sold for $3,200 to Illinois, Positive Outcome was a $2,900 sale to Kentucky, Pro Side sold for $4,000 to a Florida buyer and Bngs Express was sold for $23,000 to Ohio. Willi Ray formerly raced on P.E.I., with the Americanbred pacer selling for $3,000 at the sale to a Pennsylvania address.
