’Canes split with Chargers
Men’s squad loses rare game, women’s team on fire from three-point territory
The host Crandall Chargers won the battle on the boards Sunday in Moncton and handed the Holland College Hurricanes their first loss of the season.
The Hurricanes outshot the Chargers, but had 23 fewer shots from the field thanks to being outrebounded 52-29.
Leading by two heading to the fourth, the Hurricanes were outscored 29-22 and lost 108-103.
Brandon Fields had a gamehigh 33 points for the Chargers while Hassan Maidal and Trey David each went for 22.
Marcus Dawkins led Holland College with 22 points while
Jace Colley chipped in
21 and Kyle
Leface 19. Veteran Chase
Bowden had
13 points and
10 rebounds.
Crandall improved to 4-1 while Holland College is 5-1.
The Hurricanes led 31-24 after the first quarter but the game was tied at 53 at the half. Holland College was up 81-79 going to the final quarter.
The Hurricanes travel to Fredericton, N.B., Sunday to play the St. Thomas Tommies.
Women
The Hurricanes women’s squad couldn’t miss from downtown on Sunday.
Breauna Rivoli-Johnson was 5-for-5 from three-point territory and Lexi MacInnis was 6-for-6 as the Hurricanes hit all 15 of their deep balls to defeat the Chargers 108-82.
Johnson had a game-high 31 points while MacInnis added 20. Tyleigha Nelson had 14 points and nine rebounds while Jayla Verney and Alyssa Canning each chipped in 10 points.
Madison McHatten led the Chargers with 27 points. Crandall also hit all of its three-point shots (9-for-9).
The Hurricanes improved to 3-2 while the Chargers are 0-4. Holland College concludes its first half Sunday in Fredericton, N.B., with a game against St. Thomas.
