Adults can now take centre stage

Spotlight School of Arts Inc. is offering adults a chance to dance, sing and act on stage.

The three new programs – Dance for Fitness and Fun, Acting for Adults, and Musical Theatre for Adults – kick off this month and January in the downtown location.

Reasha Walsh, executive director of Spotlight School of Arts Inc., the focus is on the value of the arts.

“We encourage people who have never done classes like this before to try,” she said. “They can be so beneficial for physical and mental health, as well as confidence building. I can run off the benefits for hours on why the arts are important, but the mental health benefits are really great.”

Acting for Adults is a 22-week program for novice and experienced actors alike, which culminates in a full-length theatre production in the spring of 2018. Musical Theatre for Adults is a 25-week program that teaches students voice and musical theatre style singing. At the end of the program, students perform a cabaret-style show.

“They will be doing group numbers and solo pieces in one collaborative show,” said Walsh. “With the acting class, they will perform an actual play.”

The two programs opened recently, but Walsh encourages adults to register over the next two weeks while space is still available. And for those who want to bust out a signature move and get into the groove, the Dance for Fitness and Fun program seeks participants for the next program in January.
