Today is Giving Tuesday

Island charities say thank you to donors

-

P.E.I.’s Lt.-Gov. Antoinette Perry is joining local charities to say thank you to Islanders as part of this year’s Giving Tuesday.

“Every day of the year, Islanders are taking steps to improve their local communities and helping those in need,” said Perry.

“Take a moment to congratulate yourself as those efforts are appreciated.”

P.E.I.’s Giving Tuesday’s community leaders Deanna Carroll and Helen Chapman are hoping Island charities will share pictures and video online demonstrating the many acts of kindness throughout the day.

“Most people know about Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and today we celebrate Giving Tuesday,” said Carroll. “It is a global movement for giving and volunteering.”

The global movement for giving and volunteering takes place each year since 2012 after Black Friday. Known as the “opening day” of the giving season, it’s a time where charities, companies and individuals join together and rally for favourite causes. In the same

way that retailers take part in Black Friday, the giving community has come together for Giving Tuesday.

“Several Island charities are participating this year, and we thank Premier Wade MacLauchlan for proclaiming Giving Tuesday an Islandwide event,” said Chapman. “Giving Tuesday leverages the power

of social media to promote the movement and the generosity of people helping improve communities.”

Chapman also chairs the P.E.I. Chapter of Canadian Association of Gift Planners (CAGP) and helps educate the public about gift planning.

“Today is also a great reminder to everyone to make

their charitable gift with the 2017 tax season coming to a close.”
