Charlottetown will see an additional 30 senior units, confirms Tina Mundy
The minister of family and human services confirmed funding for social housing in Charlottetown during the legislature Thursday.
Tina Mundy said her department plans to issue a request for proposals in the coming weeks for an additional 30 senior units.
This was in response to questions posed by Kathleen Casey, MLA for Charlottetown-Lewis Point, who wanted to know if any dollars from the 2016 federal budget would be going towards providing social housing in the Charlottetown area.
“Not a day goes by that you aren’t in my ear, asking me when the funding will be coming forward,” said Mundy. “Today, I can confirm to you that there will be funding going towards creating social housing in the Charlottetown area.”
This is the second announcement made this week regarding social housing.
An additional 20 senior units will be constructed in Summerside.
As of October, 634 seniors are awaiting senior social housing with 296 of those looking to reside in Charlottetown.
Casey wanted to know what is going to happen to those that remain on the waiting list in the Charlottetown area.
Mundy says these 50 senior housing units will help address some of the current needs on P.E.I. while they put together a provincial strategy.
“We have already compiled . . . a co-design team that has already met. They are now going to be collaborating with the housing task force and they will be looking at innovative and new ways that we can address long-term housing needs on Prince Edward Island.”
