Irish quartet on stage
Ómós returns to the Irish Cultural Centre for ceilidh
Ómós will perform at the Benevolent Irish Society on Saturday, Dec. 2, at 8 p.m.
The Irish quartet consists of Sean Nós singer Mossie Ó Scanláin, County Kerry, master fiddler Finbarr Condon-English, County Tipperary and multiinstrumentalist Dr. Cian O Morain, County Kerry as well as Island-born vocalist Mary MacGillivray.
Ómós means homage or respect in the Irish language. The ceilidh will feature stories, music and songs from Ireland and Scotland and well as East Coast folk music.
A native Irish speaker, Ó Scanláin became immersed in Irish music, language and culture from a very early age. He sings, with passion, the songs that he grew up with in his native Corca Dhuibhne. He has released three albums and one single with producers and musicians Steve Cooney and Shane Howard.
This is his third Canadian tour, and he especially remembers his warm welcome on P.E.I. on his previous tours. He has deep respect for the culture and heritage on Prince Edward Island.
Condon-English’s first love is traditional Irish music and he has been the resident violinist at Brú Ború, Cashel, County Tipperary for many years. Currently, he is a practicing veterinarian in Ireland.
O Morain recently completed a master’s degree in the performance of traditional Irish music.
He has toured Ireland, Canada and the U.S. and now calls P.E.I. home, working as a family physician in North Rustico.
MacGillivray sings in English as well as Irish and Scottish Gaelic, and is learning to speak the languages of her heritage.
The ceilidh is at the Irish Cultural Centre, 582 North River Rd., Charlottetown and includes a 50/50 draw and a light lunch is served during the intermission. Doors open at 7 p.m.
Admission price is at the door. For more information, call 902-566-3273.
