Winston S. Smith of Saint John, N.B. passed away unexpected­ly on Sunday, Dec.10th following a sudden cardiac arrest at home. Born in PEI in 1942, he was son of the late Wilfred & Myrtle Smith. He was the husband of Lynn (MacIsaac) Smith for 51 years & father of Kimberly (Michael) Campbell, Halifax; Jeffrey (Amanda), Moncton; Gregory (Lesley-Jane), Bermuda. An outstandin­g basketball player& long-distance runner, he received scholarshi­ps from the YMCA to pursue university studies. He was a graduate of Prince of Wales College, Charlottet­own; Sir George Williams University, Montreal and UNB Fredericto­n where he obtained his Masters in Education. He began his teaching career in Saint John in 1966 progressin­g from teacher, guidance counsellor, Vice Principal and then Principal of Simonds Junior High, retiring in 1998. He was also an instructor at UNBSJ for several years and a former member of the Provincial Parole Board. In recent years, Win enjoyed working for Avis and was a former executive member of the SJ Adanac Club. Win is survived by his wife, children and grandchild­ren Benjamin (Michaella), Petawawa; Meghan, Moncton & Mackenzie Campbell, Halifax; sisters Marion (Don) Williams, Halifax; Dolly (Everett) Adams, Elmsdale & Bonita (Gerard) Doucette, Scarboroug­h. He was predecease­d by his brothers Al and George, and sisters Florence, Alice and Arilda. Also mourning his passing are his MacIsaac in-laws who he loved dearly, his wide circle of friends and the many students whose lives he touched. As per Winston’s wishes, rather than a funeral service, a celebratio­n of his life will be held on Friday, Dec.15th at Royal Kennebecas­is Yacht Club from 4-7 p.m. Friends & colleagues are invited to pay respects to family and share their favourite “Win” stories, a man who brought joy to so many lives. Dress is casual and colour is encouraged. A eulogy from the family will be delivered around 6 p.m. Fundy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangemen­ts.
