Ford, Breau win three titles
Hayden Ford and Adelle Breau each recently won three titles at the Badminton P.E.I. under-15 and under-19 tournaments in Charlottetown.
Ford captured the girls’ titles in under-19 singles, doubles and mixed doubles while Breau won under-15 girls’ singles, mixed doubles and paired with Ford to win under-19 girls’ doubles.
It was the final junior tournament of the season before provincials.
Ford won all of her matches easily in the under-19 singles round robin to claim first place. Cici Huo came second at 2-1, including a match with a close 22-20 game versus Brittney Foster. Cherry Lam came third with her 2-1 (21-17, 8-21, 21-18) win over Foster.
In under-19 girls’ doubles, Breau/Ford won the round robin with three wins. Alexis Fougere/Valerie Mountain came second with tight wins over Huo/Lam (21-23, 21-16, 21-18) and Foster/Sophia Galway (22-20, 21-13).
Huo/Lam defeated Foster/ Galway in a nail-biter 21-14, 2426, 21-12 to come third.
In under-19 mixed play, Ford teamed with Aiden Pot to win the round-robin event. Dylan Batchilder/Brittney Foster won silver in close matches. Yihan Zhang/Cici Huo defeated Logan Woods/Cherry Lam 2220, 21-17 to come third.
In under-19 boys’ singles, Batchilder emerged as the winner with four straight-set victories, including a 21-10, 21-11 semifinal win over Brandon Hastings. In the other semifinal, Michael Bernard held off Brandon Gaudet 21-16, 22-20, 21-16.
Batchilder won final 21-12, 21-11. Ming Yi Chen, Spencer Gallant and Yihan Zhang had strong games in the main round. Yihan Zhang won the consolation.
In under-19 boys’ doubles, Batchilder/Bernard defeated Pot/Woods 20-22, 21-10, 21-12 in one semifinal, and Gaudet/ Hastings advanced in their semifinal over Ming Yi Chen/ Yinxiao Chen 10-21, 21-17, 21-9.
Batchilder/Bernard won the final 21-15, 21-16 while the consolation winners were Brayden Bruce/Yihan Zhang.
Breau won her three matches in under-15 girls’ singles, including a three-set match versus Alexis Fougere to get the gold medal. Fougere was second with two wins, including a close match against Torey MacDonald 21-18, 16-21, 21-15. MacDonald came third win her win against Sophia Galway.
In under-15 mixed, Breau teamed with Spencer Gallant to win both matches and the title. Kevin Na Su/Torey MacDonald came second with their 24-22, 21-17 win over Haibo Li/Alexis Fougere.
In under-15 boys’ singles, Yinxiao Chen defeated Haibo Li 21-11, 21-15 in a semifinal. In the other half of the draw, Christopher MacDougall won back-to-back three-set matches over Guangqian Shen and Mitchell Ford to make it to the semifinals. He then defeated Kevin Na Su 21-11, 21-15 to advance. Chen won the final 21-19, 18-21, 21-19. Guangqian Shen claimed the consolation.
In under-15 boys’ doubles, Spencer Gallant/Guangqian Shen won the title with three victories in the round-robin event. Christopher MacDougall/Keefe Marshall came second with two wins, including a close one over Li/Yuan 21-14, 16-21, 21-15. Li/Yuan came third with their win over Ryan Hearn/ Kevin Na Su.
