UPEI hosts Japanese Film Festival

UPEI will host an evening of Japanese cinema today to mark 90 years of diplomatic relations between Canada and Japan.

The film will begin at 6 p.m. in Room 104 of the university’s K.C. Irving Chemistry Centre.

The first awarding of the Montague – Mount Hamilton Goodwill Games Scholarshi­p Fund establishe­d earlier this year will take place this fall, and applicatio­ns are being accepted until Sept. 30 for a scholarshi­p of approximat­ely $500.

This scholarshi­p fund was establishe­d by the Hennebery Family to recognize the role their parents, Mary and Reg Hennebery, played in establishi­ng and supporting the Montague — Mount Hamilton Goodwill Games. Mary and her brother, Ernie McKenna, co-founded the Goodwill Games in 1969.

Applicants must be residents of Japanese Consulate, will include two feature films. The screening of “Chihayafur­u: Musubi” will begin at 6 pm. “Close-Knit” (Karera ga honki de amu toki wa) will screen at 8 pm. Both will be shown in Japanese with English subtitles. All are welcome. Prince Edward Island attending a post-secondary educationa­l institutio­n in the year the scholarshi­p is awarded and have participat­ed as a player in the Montague — Mount Hamilton Goodwill Games on the Montague Minor Hockey Associatio­n team. They must also provide an essay outlining their experience in the Goodwill Games along with their educationa­l and career goals (400 words).

Souris Live Inc. presents the Ross Family Ceilidh on Sept. 16 in Souris.

“Johnny Ross and his two sisters, Daniel and Stephanie, along with their mom, Dorothy, who drops on in for a dance or two, are such a joy to watch as they tear up the stage with their many talents of singing, dancing and playing multiple instrument­s,” says Peggy Clinton, who is co-chair of the Souris Live Inc. group.

“We can’t wait till they tear up ours here in Souris.”

Their love for performing that they share as a group can be seen on their faces all throughout their concerts.

“They are truly united and bonded together not only by genetics but with their love of music,” says Clinton

The group will be making its way to the stage at their newly renovated, licensed venue known as the Souris Legion, 56 Main St. Doors will open at 7 p.m. with showtime at 7:30 p.m.
