Halifax wins bronze medal

Capital District, Fredericto­n post semifinal wins

The Halifax Mets won the bronze medal at the Baseball Canada 2018 Atlantic 13-andunder championsh­ip.

The Mets, led by Jackson Montreuil’s 3-for-4 performanc­e at the plate, defeated the Kennebecas­is Valley Red Sox 9-1 in the third-place game Sunday morning. Austin Verge, winning pitcher Benito Bonilla and Rory MacDonald all contribute­d two hits as Halifax outhit Kennebecas­is Valley 13-3.

Jacob Kaine had two hits for the Red Sox, and Riley Mitchell took the pitching loss.

The Capital District Islanders and Fredericto­n Royals punched their tickets to the final on Saturday afternoon. Capital District, which outscored their opponents 37-4 in posting a round-robin record of 3-0 (wonlost), defeated the Kennebecas­is Valley Red Sox from New Brunswick 13-0 in one of two semifinal games. The Royals, who were 2-1 in the round robin, defeated the previously undefeated Halifax Mets 7-3 in the other.

Graysen LaPorte pitched two-hit ball and struck out 12 in a complete-game effort in the Islanders’ five-inning victory.

LaPorte and Brett Arsenault each drove in a pair of runs while Luke Coughlin (2-2, three runs scored, RBI) and Jack Burke (2-3, run scored, RBI) had multiple-hit efforts to pace the Islanders’ offensivel­y.

Riley Mitchell took the pitching loss.

Fredericto­n 7 Halifax 3 Five players recorded single hits for Fredericto­n, which scored twice in the top of the first, fourth and fifth innings and added a single run in the sixth. Caleb Rice, who worked 5 1/3 innings, earned the pitching win over Adam Crocker. Rice and Sam Gallagher combined to toss a three-hitter.
