Screenwriting retreat in October
Leadership students at Charlottetown Rural have just collected their first harvest from the newly-built school garden. This project has engaged many students in several curricular areas within the school. They will be supplying fresh organic produce to the culinary program and cafeteria at the school and spread awareness of healthy eating and where food comes from.

The St. Croix canoe trip is Oct. 28-30. A great opportunity for students, it involves camping and paddling on moving water through a historic river on the Maine/New Brunswick border. The first information meeting has taken place and on-water training will begin next week.
Following a very successful year with Charlottetown Rural Gardens, both in the greenhouse and in the outdoor garden, planning is underway to continue this venture and invite more students and staff to participate. Meetings will be held to provide information, gather interest and make plans. Welcome to all KRHS students, especially the new Grade 9’s. This year the school has 150 students, 14 teachers, three educational assistants, two youth service workers, one workplace assistant, three support staff and seven bus drivers.

The 38th annual KRHS Terry Fox Run will be held Sept. 19 with all funds raised going to cancer research. Appreciation is expressed to Kevin Stewart and the student council for their tremendous efforts in organizing this event. Students and staff will walk on the Confederation Trail. Last year $870 was raised.
On Sept. 20, KRHS Peer Helpers will be attending Provincial Peer Helping Training at Credit Union Place with various other Island high schools. Appreciation is expressed to Peer Helping teacher Lesley Cousins.
There is still time and space available for students to sign up for Victory in Europe Tour 2020. It commemorates the 75th anniversary since the end of World War II in Europe as well as important stops from World War I. KRHS, KISH, and TOSH will visit three countries: France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The cost is just under $3700 and there will be some fundraising opportunities prior to the trip. Grade 10 members of the ADP in Agriculture & Bioscience will participate in the Eastern P.E.I. tour and Animal Safe Handling course on Sept. 20-21.

The Aggies will once again spearhead the Farm Credit Canada Drive Away Hunger Food Drive on Sept. 24 with the generous support of all KRH. students and staff. Everyone will be working with the South Shore Food Share which is a new food bank located in Crapaud.
The Grade 11 and 12 ADP students will travel to the Dalhousie University Agriculture Campus High School Induction Day in Truro, N.S. on Sept. 27. Students will tour the campus and explore the many programs of studies. They will also participate in a plant science and an animal science hands-on lab in the afternoon.
Youth service worker Rodney MacFadyen is busy every morning supervising and preparing the breakfast/snack program, which is offered free for all students daily. Toast bagels and fresh fruit available every morning from 8:15-8:30 a.m.
Heckbert’s Studio will be at Westisle from Sept. 13 -19 to take photos. Signup sheets are in the office window. If students miss the opportunity at school they will have to go to Heckbert’s Studio in Summerside for their grad photos. Lifetouch will also be doing photos on Sep. 28 for all students.
Westisle, Callaghan and Hernewood are now offering a pilot late bus program on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Two buses will leave Westisle at 4:45 p.m., with one traveling to Hernewood and one to Callaghan, continuing from there to each elementary school for alternate stops. Students are encouraged to take advantage of this service.
A back to school dance is Sept. 20. The Terry Fox run is Sept. 21. The breakfast program is preparing to run again, and morning volunteers are needed. Anyone who is looking to help can call 902-853-8626 for more information or to sign up.

Duke of Edinburgh students will be participating in an adventurous journey the weekend of Sept. 28-30, with yoga, hiking, overnighting at a hostel and cooking all meals.

Nancy Dodd who teaches writing at Pepperdine University in California, will be working with individuals as story editor and adviser, Oct. 15-20. The author of the Writer’s Compass (http:// www.thewriterscompass.com/), she has mentored screenwriters the Cornwall area, is re-uniting for a special performance. Other guests include Allan Keoughan, Bernadette Roche and Fr. Keith Kennific.
The evening includes a 50/50 draw, fudge sale as well as door prizes and home-made refreshments.

The retreat is at Victoria Cottages in Victoria-by-the-Sea, a group of new cottages with amenities and a pub just down the road.
Participants will be responsible for their own meals except for dinner. Dinner for five nights is included in the fee that will also cover the costs for Dodd’s travel, Screenwriters’ They door.
Birthright P.E.I. offers support to women who face unplanned or difficult pregnancies through its free volunteer services.
Birthright receives no public funding but exists through support of this fund raiser and the generous donations of groups and individuals.
