Ceilidh tonight at the Irish Cultural Centre
Performers include Cian O Morain, Mary MacGillivray, Bryan Byrne and Patrick Cleland
The Oct. 12 ceilidh in the Katherine Hughes Memorial Hall of the Irish Cultural Centre will feature Cian O Morain and Mary MacGillivray with Bryan Byrne and Patrick Cleland. The centre is located at 582 North River Road
There will be a 50/50 draw during the evening in the air-conditioned hall. A light lunch will be served during the intermission. Doors open at 7 p.m,, show starts at 8. O Morain hails from Country Kerry in Ireland and now is the family physician in North Rustico. As well, he holds a master’s degree in Music from Limerick University.
He and his partner, Mary McGillivray, often entertain local audiences and are a favourite at the Irish Hall. They accompany their singing on keyboard, guitar and squeeze box. He is also a storyteller.
McGillivray, who sings in English and Gaelic, grew up in a musical family with roots in Cape Breton and P.E.I. and says two things were always on the go at their place: the music and the tea pot.
She once asked her father, Jim McGillivray, what they liked to do growing up, and he said, “They got together and made music and had a laugh and had a good time.”
An Irish traditional guitar duet from Ireland, Brian Byrne is from Cork and Patrick Crehan is from Tipperary. They combine everything from Irish traditional to Scottish and rock music to create a fresh and unique sound.
The pair have been playing together since undertaking a bachelor’s degree in Irish Music and Dance at the University of Limerick in 2016. They have performed across Europe, Africa and now North America.
The pair have achieved musical success back home in Ireland, having qualified to the National Finals in a number of highly competitive events, such as All Ireland Fleadh, Siansa Gael Linn and Scór Encore.
