Herb Dickieson is aiming to once again plant the NDP banner in the P.E.I. legislature.

Dickieson intends to seek the party’s nomination for District 25, O’Leary-Inverness.

The Howlan resident has served the West Prince region as a physician for more than 30 years but retired from medicine last year.

With that newfound freedom comes more time on his hands and he would like to spend some of it once again serving his community in the legislature.

“I just really think I can help make a contribution to revitalize rural Prince Edward Island,” he said.

Dickieson has the distinction of being the province’s only NDP MLA. He previously served in the legislature from 19962000 and served as the party leader from 1995-2002.

“Despite West Prince and rural areas being a prime source of wealth on the Island with agriculture, the fisheries and power generation through windmills, we are woefully under serviced in many ways, including health care, transportation and infrastructure, as well as job creation.” Herb Dickieson

Rural P.E.I. remains his concern, he said, and if elected he hopes to fight for issues to strengthen that part of the Island community.

“Despite West Prince and rural areas being a prime source of wealth on the Island with agriculture, the fisheries and power generation through windmills, we are woefully under serviced in many ways, including health care, transportation and infrastructure, as well as job creation.”

Leader Joe Byrne welcomed Dickieson’s latest foray into provincial politics.

“Herb brings that past experience, very valuable, but also something that people value – Herb is deeply committed to his community and well-known. He’s a good candidate and we’re really happy to have him as part of the team.”

No date for the party’s nomination meeting in District 25 has been set.
