Many Islanders would have had complex and conflicted emotions about the war, but those of Irish heritage faced a particularly difficult question: how to reconcile an avowedly imperialist cause with ancestral ties to a homeland caught up in an existential crisis about her place in that same empire? Lloyd is the university archivist and special collections librarian at UPEI. Since August 2014, he has written monthly columns for The Guardian marking the centennial of the First World War. Holy Redeemer Candlelight Carol Service Choir is starting practices for this year’s Candlelight Carol Service at Holy Redeemer, with practice resuming in the church on Pond Street on Nov. 18, 1:30 p.m., as there will not be a practice on Remembrance Day. The candlelight service will be held on Dec. 16, 7:30 p.m. in the church. Anyone who would like to sing in this choir is welcome to attend. Bring a friend who might be interested as well. Gormlaith Maynes, new director of Holland College Celtic arts program and visiting musician from Ireland, is giving a free Irish tune workshop on Nov. 10 at the Old Triangle Pourhouse, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Sarah Svendsen organ recital on Nov. 16 will be followed on Nov. 17 by a 45-minute children’s workshop and mini-recital at Park Royal United Church, Charlottetown, at 11 a.m. The Saturday workshop is free. The P.E.I. Registered Music Teachers’ Association
is offering workshops for teachers and students with Canadian composer Christine Donkin. The first workshop, specifically designed for music teachers to assist those who hope to encourage their students to compose music, is Nov. 16, 7-8:30. Admission is $20.
