Composer presenting workshops
The P.E.I. Registered Music Teachers’ Association is offering a number of workshops for teachers and students later this month with Canadian composer Christine Donkin.
The awardwinning composer, whose music is promoted by several publishers, appears regularly within Royal Conservatory curriculum. Workshops will be held at the Steel Recital Hall (UPEI campus) on Nov. 16-17.
The first workshop, specifically designed for music teachers, aims to assist instructors who hope to encourage their students to compose music. Topics covered include: the inspiration process, the composition process, and the notation process. It takes place on Nov. 16, 7-8:30. Admission is $20.
The other workshops are designed for students at the elementary and intermediate/ advance level. Participants will learn what it’s like to be a professional composer, with topics including open-minded listening, creative activities, giving positive and constructive feedback, and working together to compose a piece of music. The elementary session is Saturday, Nov. 17, 9:3010:30 a.m.; admission is $10. The intermediate/advance session is 1:30-3 p.m.; admission is $15.
