P.E.I. Regiment Museum depicts Islanders’ role in many wars and conflicts

- BY TONY DAVIS

Captain Greg Gallant has been the curator for the Prince Edward Island Regiment Museum since it opened in 1990.

He is still taken aback by some of the artifacts on display.

“We have a full-size horse and a man on top in a First

World War uniform,” Gallant said.

There are even biscuits on display from the Boer War.

“Uneaten obviously,” Gallant said.

The museum shows the Island’s military history, with artifacts on display from the early 1800’s right up to the Afghanistan conflict.

“Our oldest uniform is 1840, and then our newest uniform which was worn in Afghanistan,” Gallant said.

Right now, there is a display which has been there for a year which retraces P.E.I.’s role in the First World War.

“It will be on display for the next six months. There are seven bilingual panels on the wall, and it talks about each of the different regiments that were recruited and left P.E.I. during the First World War. It talks about the navy, the air force, the home front, and a bit about the nurses.” Gallant said.

The P.E.I. Regiment Museum will be open for a few hours after the Charlottetown Remembrance Day Ceremony on Nov.11 until 3 p.m.
