Wings, Vipers enjoy home cooking

A little home cooking did just the trick as the Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers and the Western Arsenault’s Fish Mart Red Wings tallied victories on home ice in Island Junior Hockey League action on Sunday.

Kensington doubled the Eastern Maniacs 4-2 in the evening contest in Kensington after the Red Wings outgunned the Moncton Vito’s 6-1 in Abram-Village in interlocking play with the New Brunswick Junior Hockey League in the afternoon matchup.

Western upped its league-leading record to 8-3, while second place Kensington moved to 6-2.

Isaac Knox’s two goals 1:09 apart in the third period broke open a 3-1 game and fuelled the Wings victory.

Knox also scored in the first and second frames, tallying four goals and moving into a tie with teammate Chasse Gallant (2-3) for the league lead in goals with 12.

Calvin McRae and Silas Handrahan each chipped in two assists.

Nicolas Bacso, from Louis-Joseph Vachon and Patrik Landry, netted the Vito’s marker.

Luke Oliver (6-0) earned the goaltending win over Jamal Nelson.

The Wings outshot Moncton 38-34.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period. Western led 3-1 at the second intermission.

Vipers 4, Maniacs 2

Eastern’s Jason Poley made a game of it with two third-period goals, closing the gap to 3-2 with 4:53 remaining, but Nick Trainor’s empty net score gave Kensington the insurance it needed to secure the win.

Morgan Darbyson, CJ McCardle and Carson MacManaman netted the other Vipers markers over the first two periods.

Poley’s first goal had help from Nick Steele, Dawson Palmer and Cam Duffy.

In goal, Caleb Coyle (4-1) got the win over Noah Laybolt.

Eastern outshot Kensington 3938. Kensington led 1-0 after the first period and 3-0 at the second intermission.
