Storm’s Scott receives weekly award

Hurricanes’ Freeman named player of week in the NBL of Canada

Tyler Scott of the Island Storm has been named the Canadian of the week in the National Basketball League of Canada for the week ending Dec. 2.

Scott, a six-foot-three guard who played collegiately at Prince Edward Island, scored 22 points, pulled down seven rebounds and had a blocked shot in the Storm’s only game of the week – a 123-111 home-court victory over the London Lightning – while playing with a broken finger on his left (non-shooting) hand.

“I told the players before we played that night,” said Storm head coach Tim Kendrick, “I was pleased and happy with our practices, and we were concerned whether there was going to be some rust. But once Tyler hit a pair of three-pointers, I said to the players, ‘Every time Tyler gets a look, let’s get him the ball.’

“And once he makes a couple of shots, he’s a very tough guard to beat.”

Player of week

The Halifax Hurricanes’ Gabe Freeman is the league’s player of the week.

The six-foot-six forward, who played collegiately at Costa Mesa CC, averaged 22.5 points per game and 12 rebounds per game in the Hurricanes’ two victories, pushing the Nova Scotia crew from last in the standings to third place. He also helped engineer some late-game heroics in a Sunday afternoon victory over the St. John’s Edge.

“Gabe’s such a warrior, he’s of that same mentality,” said Halifax head coach Mike Leslie. “And he does so many things on the floor to help your team get in a position to win, and that three that he knocked down (Sunday) was a huge shot, but he also made the play that got us the opportunity to win in the end – the play was drawn for him, but he found the second option to Tyrone Watson, and that’s how he helps us win. We have a younger group right now, and we’re pleased to have him as a leader right now.”
