Luis Anselmi is counting down the days.

The Holland College student tells me he’s spending every free moment practising the piano or the cuatro, a four-string instrument, until he gets to perform at the Florence Simmons Performance Hall.

And he can’t wait.

“I’m so excited. After practising throughout the school year, it’s time for us to showcase what we’ve been doing in school to the community so people outside the college can listen to our work,” says the 19-year-old performing artist.

He’s one of the students getting ready for their first showcase of the year on Thursday, Dec. 13, 7 p.m., at the Florence Simmons Performance Hall on the Prince of Wales Campus in Charlottetown.

This concert will feature their best selections from rock, country, improv, Celtic and world music. Besides giving students an opportunity to perform, the showcase has become a perennial favourite with music lovers.

“They will see the enjoyment we have of sharing the stage with our classmates,” says Anselmi, whose ensemble will perform a blues arrangement of “Attention”, a pop tune, as well as some Celtic and world music.

The showcase has a double purpose for the musician as it could alsi serve as an audition tape.

“Because I’m in my second year, it will be interesting to use that material, which showcases our improvisational skills, to apply to another university.”

The showcase concert is a special night for our students and instructors, as they get to share their hard work with the community, says Liam Corcoran, program manager for the School of Performing Arts.

“We are so fortunate to be in a place that values and supports live music. There will be something for every musical taste in this concert.”

The music performance program has students from all over the world, including Venezuela, the Bahamas, India, Mexico and the U.K.

Anselmi is from Venezuela and tells me he enjoys the experience of “meeting people from all over.”

“It’s been a wonderful experience living on P.E.I. I want to continue my studies, so I’m looking at agreements that Holland College has with other universities.”
