Two Nova Scotians in their 50s are facing drug charges after Montreal border agents intercepted an ecstasy shipment from Germany.

Police say a package containing about a kilogram of suspected ecstasy tablets was destined for South Rawdon, N.S.

Canada Border Services Agency officers spotted it at a Montreal mail processing centre, and notified the Nova Scotia RCMP’s organized crime section.

On Jan. 3, CBSA and RCMP officers arrested a 51-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman at a South Rawdon home, and seized the package.

The RCMP said Monday they found more ecstasy during a search of the house, as well as cocaine, drug paraphernalia, cash and an “unsafely stored firearm with ammunition.”

The two face charges of importation of a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking a controlled substance.

“Those who import drugs are trying to profit at the expense of the health and safety of Nova Scotians,” RCMP Staff-Sgt. Monica Jodrey said in a statement.

The two were released and are to appear in Shubenacadie provincial court on March 18, and police said further charges are expected.

Annie Beausejour, the CBSA’s acting regional director general for Quebec, said the agency places a high priority on the detection of illicit drugs.

“Our officers use an approach based on risk assessment, intelligence and advanced technologies to target illegal shipments,” she said in a statement. “They also work closely with their national and international partners to prevent the trade of illegal drugs through international borders.”
