Mixed results for hoop Hurricanes
Holland College teams win two of four games in weekend ACAA action
The Holland College Hurricanes’ basketball teams faced the UNBSJ Seawolves and Mount Allison Mounties over the weekend, and the men came away two victories while the women dropped both contests.
The men beat Mount Allison 103-81 in Sunday’s Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) action and UNBSJ 108-91 on Saturday.
The women lost to Mount Allison 71-43 Sunday and to UNBSJ 78-50 on Saturday.
Holland College leads the men’s
loop at 10-0. The Hurricanes dropped to 3-7 and sixth place in the women’s standings.
Next up, both teams host St. Thomas on Saturday (5 p.m., women, 7 p.m., men) and Crandall on Sunday (3 p.m., women, 5 p.m., men).
Men Sunday Hurricanes 103, Mounties 81
The Hurricanes came out of the gates, opened a 32-13 lead after one quarter and never looked back.
Jace Colley paced the offence with 24 points. Martin Campbell and Travis Adams each chipped in 20 points.
Jordan Holness added 18 points and Agak Lual chipped in 10 off the bench.
Adams also grabbed 11 rebounds.
Saturday
Hurricanes 108, Seawolves 91 Seven Hurricanes, led by Jace Colley’s 19 points and 12 rebounds, scored in double figures in the high-scoring affair.
Other help came from Jordan Holness (17 points), Connor Therrien (16), Cam Paynter (15), Travis Adams (15), Roosevelt Whyley (13, seven rebounds) and Martin Campbell (13).
Women Sunday
Mounties 71, Hurricanes 43 The ‘Canes led 12-10 after the first quarter, but the Mounties rebounded, pulled ahead 25-16 by halftime and cruised to the win in the second half.
Lexi MacInnis had 13 points
and 10 rebounds to lead Holland College. Kassandra Little also grabbed 10 boards.
Saturday Seawolves 78, Hurricanes 50
Holland College went into the first break tied with UNBSJ 14-14, but was outscored 26-12 in the second quarter as the Seawolves pulled away for good.
Desiree Oakley had a gamehigh 18 points to lead the way for the ‘Canes and Ashley Plaggenhoef added 12. Oakley and Little each nabbed six rebounds.
