Women Hurricanes sweep, men split weekend action

Holland College teams play ACAA matches

The Holland College Hurricanes’ volleyball teams won three of four matches over the weekend as the women swept the Université de Saint-Anne Dragons at home and the men split road games versus the UNBSJ Seawolves.

On Sunday, the women thumped the Dragons 3-0 (25-8, 25-13, 2518) as Laura Ready’s seven kills led a balanced offence in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n (ACAA) contest.

Zayley Smith added five kills while Philicia Taylor and Lauren Moerike each contribute­d four.

Murphy had a match-high 22 assists. Tayler Allen recorded a match-high 14 digs.

In Saturday’s 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-11) victory, Jasmine Smith had nine kills in her Hurricanes’ debut, followed by Abby Hyndman and Brittany States, who each had six.

Murphy tallied 26 assists. Allen and Ready had 12 and 10 digs, respective­ly.

The Hurricanes moved to 9-3 and sit in second place in the standings. The Dragons fell to 1-11. The ‘Canes host St. Thomas on Saturday and Mount Saint Vincent on Sunday. Match times are 2 p.m. and noon, respective­ly, at Holland College.

Men

On Sunday, the men dropped a 3-2 decision (26-24, 23-25, 20-25, 25-19, 20-18) to UNBSJ despite double-digit kills from Simon Archibald (15), Riley O’Keefe (12), Brett Butler (12) and Jeff MacDonald (11), and Nicholas Menzies dishing out a match-high 46 assists.

Butler and Marcus Lapointe each had 15 digs while MacDonald added 10. Saturday, the ‘Canes straightse­tted the Seawolves 3-0 (2514, 25-17, 26-24) as Butler led the way with 10 kills and seven digs and Menzies offered up 27 assists.

The Hurricanes dropped to 3-6 and sit in third place in the ACAA standings.

They will host Université de Sainte-Anne on Sunday (3 p.m.) at Holland College. UNBSJ upped its mark to 5-4.
