Junior Islanders split games in Chatham

The P.E.I. Junior Islanders split a doublehead­er in Chatham, N.B., in New Brunswick Junior Baseball League action Sunday.

The Ironmen scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on an Islanders’ throwing error to pull out a 3-2 win in Game 1.

The Islanders bounced back in the second contest to prevail 8-4.

The Islanders, who now sport a league-leading record of 6-2, will visit the Fredericto­n Royals (0-5) on Saturday.

IRONMEN 3, ISLANDERS 2

P.E.I. starting pitcher Alex Jabbour matched Ironman ace Zach Newman pitch for pitch for five innings and left with a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of sixth, Alex Preston’s solo homer off reliever Patrick Gallant tied the score and set the stage for the walk-off win. Newman went the distance to earn the win, surrenderi­ng eight hits and striking out nine. Jabbour allowed five hits and struck out eight.

Ryne MacIsaac had three hits for P.E.I. while Gabe Penalver, Connor McGregor, John Savidant, Gavin Hickey and Patrick Young each had a hit.

Evan Savoy and Matt Carroll had two hits each for Chatham.

ISLANDERS 8, IRONMEN 4

In Game 2, Isles’ starter Chandler LaPorte battled through six innings to pick up the pitching win, before he was relieved by Eric Anderson. MacIsaac entered with bases loaded and nobody out in bottom of seventh, and struck out Newman and got a double-play to pick up the save. Johnny Henderson took the loss.

Young had two hits for the Islanders while Penalver, McGregor, Savidant, Connor Jones, Brett Caissie and Carter Melnick each had one. Colton McKay had two hits for Chatham.
