Man caught with stolen truck jailed

- RYAN ROSS

A P.E.I. man who was caught with a stolen truck and said he bought it from someone he didn’t know was sentenced recently to 60 days in jail.

Darcy Gregory Chandler, 24, appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown for sentencing after previously pleading guilty to possessing stolen property.

The court heard that on Nov. 11, 2018, the truck’s owner called the police to report it was stolen.

A few days later the owner saw the truck, followed it and approached Chandler, who was driving. The court heard Chandler said he bought the truck from someone in New Brunswick.

In sentencing Chandler, Orr said he paid $500 for a vehicle that had $2,500 worth of tires on it.

“Bells would be ringing,” she said.

Orr said she felt time in custody was appropriate. Chandler had a record that included several thefts of motor vehicles.

“He seems to have a problem with other people’s vehicles,” Orr said.

Chandler will serve the sentence on weekends and will be on probation for 18 months.
