Raider commits to Hurricanes
Rural’s Brynn Essery to play for Holland College squad
Brynn Essery will continue her basketball career at Holland College this fall.
The Charlottetown Rural Raiders forward has committed to the Hurricanes’ women’s squad.
“I will bring lots of positive energy and a competitive attitude to the team,” she said. “I want to work hard and help bring the team to the highest level of competition possible.”
She was part of the Raiders’ back-to-back Prince Edward Island School Athletic Association (PEISAA) senior AAA championship squads. She has represented the province at national championships, including the 2017 Canada Games in Winnipeg.
“Brynn is an athletic forward who gives us depth up front,” Hurricanes head coach Jared Cheverie said. “We are looking forward to working with Brynn to reach her potential as a student-athlete.”
The Hurricanes went 7-14 during the 2018-19 Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season and missed the playoffs. The program won back-to-back-to-back conference championships from 2015 to 17 and earned bronze and silver medals in 2015 and 2016, respectively.
The squad begins the 2019-20 ACAA regular season on Saturday, Nov. 2, when they visit the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics in Halifax. The team hosts its home opener on Saturday, Nov. 9, against the UNBSJ Seawolves.
“Fans can expect an exciting and competitive season. Hopefully they will enjoy every moment of this journey with us.”
Essery joins Colonel Gray forward Rylee Connolly and Yarmouth, N.S., guard Sophie Atkinson as part of the incoming class. Essery plans on enrolling in the open academic studies program.
“I’m excited to attend Holland College this fall as I begin my next chapter as a student-athlete,” she said. “My interactions to date have helped me realize the potential that Holland College offers me. I’m excited to see how this assists me as I work towards my career of choice.”
