The Guardian, UPEI student union to co-host forum for Charlottetown candidates
Federal candidates in the Charlottetown riding will get a chance to debate their platforms and policies at an upcoming event hosted by The Guardian and the UPEI student union.
The debate will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 1, and will give the five Charlottetown candidates the opportunity to present their ideas and outline their leadership experience in the community.
All five candidates will be in attendance, including Joe Byrne from the New Democratic Party, Robert Campbell from the Conservative Party, Sean Casey from the Liberal Party, Darcie Lanthier from the Green Party and Fred MacLeod from the Christian Heritage Party.
The debate will be held at the W.A. Murphy Student Centre. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the debate will kick off at 7 p.m.
The evening will be moderated by The Guardian’s chief political reporter Stu Neatby. Questions will be selected by the newspaper’s editorial board.
“The Guardian has often provided the community with forums like this, in order to both hold political candidates to account and allow them the chance to present their vision,” said acting managing editor Jocelyne Lloyd.
“The UPEI Student is ecstatic to be organizing the candidates forum,” said UPEISU president Emma Drake.
“It’s important to make events like this more accessible to students. When we have the opportunity to bring events to students right on campus, it allows an opportunity for them to be more educated and informed.”
“This should give voters a good overview of what the main areas of difference and agreement are on the federal issues that affect Islanders.”
Both The Guardian and the UPEI Student Union hope the event will also spur interest and engagement from millennial voters.
The event will be livestreamed and archived at www. theguardian.pe.ca, on The Guardian’s Facebook page and on the UPEISU’s social media channels.
