Island athletes compete to see who is the strongest
The first annual P.E.I. Power Strongman competition will take place Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown.
The five-event competition gets underway at 3 p.m.
This is a provincial contest, featuring 10 competitors from across the Island.
Among the notables expected to compete are George Kinch from Tyne Valley, who has finished second at the national level over the last two years; Mitchell Kinch from Tyne Valley, who finished second at Atlantics and eighth at nationals in 2018, and Mitch Illsley of Alberton, who finished second in P.E.I. two years ago and eighth at the amateur level at nationals.
Former “P.E.I. Strongest Man” Troy MacCallum of York will be returning to compete along with Morgan Ellis of Kingston, who finished fourth in the amateur division at Atlantics this year. They will be joined by Jake Dwyer of Tignish, Zane Nicholson of Nine Mile Creek as well as Naeem Rohani, Jordan Dukart and Darrel Warren of Charlottetown.
Events will be similar to those of the world’s strongest man competition, which includes the atlas stones where athletes will load circular boulders onto platforms. The deadlift has athletes picking up an Olympic bar with weights continually increasing to a maximum lift.
The farmer’s walk has the competitors carry two 250pound implements in each hand over a 100-foot course. The truck pull has the athletes pulling a 18,000-pound transfer truck. The tire flip has the competitors flipping a large tractor tire for reps. Please note that the events are subject to change.
Admission is $5 at the door and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Ostomy Canada. There will be a 50/50 as well, with the proceeds going to Ostomy Canada.
