Ethan Lowther wins Coupe de Montréal Championship Series
The Lowther brothers from Cavendish, racing under the Gerald Caseley Racing Team banner, had strong showings in the final karting race of the Coupe de Montréal Series at Mont Tremblant recently.
A total of 186 racers from Eastern and Central Canada participated in the event.
Ethan Lowther, 11, started at the back of the pack of 16 racers in the cadet division when his kart stalled at the starting line of the pre-final. He passed all but one of his fellow competitors, eventually finishing in second place in the pre-final. Penalties to other racers positioned him at the front of the pack for the final.
Ethan kept the lead right from the start and never gave up his position to win this last race of the series. Adding his points from the six-race series puts him in first place and winning the championship of the series cadet division.
Ethan’s 14-year-old brother, William Lowther, who was racing as an underage senior, qualified 13th in the field of 31 racers.
A red flag early in the first lap of the pre-final caused by two accidents before and after the first turn led to several karts incurring significant damage, including some to William’s kart. Unable to finish the pre-final, he started in 26th place in the final.
William kept his cool and managed to pass a dozen racers to finish in 13th place in the final.
His accumulated points for the season give him a seventh-place overall showing for the year, a significant accomplishment for a racer competing against some racers that have raced longer than he has been alive!
This marks the end of the racing season for William as he now moves on to hockey. However, Ethan will be competing in the final race of the Championship Kart Racing Association in New Brunswick on Sunday.
