Former Charlottetown city councillor Danny Redmond died Friday at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital at the age of 60.

Redmond had served on council from 2001 to 2014 as Ward 2’s representative.

“I was saddened to learn (Friday) morning that last night city councillor Danny Redmond passed away,’’ Mayor Philip Brown said in a statement. “He served his community with pride and dignity.’’

Through his time on council, Redmond served as chairman of the parks and recreation and police services committees.

He played a key role in the creation of the Bell Aliant Centre and several other large-scale projects.

Redmond was also a staple in the hockey community.

“On behalf of Charlottetown city council and our citizens, I would like to send condolences to his family and thank them for sharing him with the people of Charlottetown,’’ Brown added. “He will be missed.’’

Coun. Terry MacLeod, who has represented Ward 2 since 2014, said Redmond was a mentor.

“I helped Danny out when he was in as a councillor and when I decided to run, he was a big influence for me,’’ MacLeod said. “He fought hard for the residents of Ward 2 because that was the type of person Danny was. He was a very sincere man and he took every issue as (if) it was the only issue to deal with.’’

Coun. Mitchell Tweel said Redmond left an incredible legacy, re-introducing Parkdale Days, which provided the incentive for mayor and council to host summer socials throughout the city. Tweel also spoke of Redmond’s dedication to his job with the Canadian Mental Health Association.

But Tweel said Redmond also left his mark outside politics.

“In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he provided indispensable leadership in the campaign to bring tackle football to (P.E.I.) in order to give youth a chance to play a sport that he excelled at as a player, coach and board member. He was well known and very respected in the Island football community. This is an incredible loss for the city of Charlottetown and the province of P.E.I. We were close and we will always be close.’’

Redmond is survived by his wife, Paula (nee McGonnell), and children, Rebecca and Jessica.

Visitation will be at the Cutcliffe Charlottetown Funeral Home on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.

The funeral will be at St. Pius X Church on Tuesday at 10 a.m.
