‘It just floors me’
Council committee identifies Sherwood intersection, crosswalk as issues for police
Charlottetown police are looking into a couple of traffic concerns in the neighbourhood of Sherwood.
At the protective and emergency services committee's recent meeting, Police Chief Paul Smith said his department is looking into issues with the crosswalk on Mount Edward Road at the Mount Continuing Care Community and the fourway intersection at Pine Drive and Maple Avenue, adjacent to Sherwood Elementary School.
Coun. Bob Doiron, chairman of the committee, who also happens to represent the area on council, said too many motorists are not obeying the stop signs at Pine and Maple.
Doiron said he observed motorists “blowing right through the intersection’’ while he was standing nearby talking to a resident about the issue. “It just floors me,’’ Doiron said.
The councillor said maybe the city should think of replacing the stop signs at the intersection with LED solar-powered traffic safety stop signs so that they stand out more. The City of Summerside has them in spots.
Coun. Mike Duffy, who also sits on the committee, said there are many four-way intersections throughout the city with similar issues and the only real way to solve the problem is by increased police enforcement.
Mayor Philip Brown said he doubted the solar-powered signs would be the longterm answer, suggesting that the width the streets is partially responsible for the fact motorists don’t come to a complete stop.
Smith said he will consult with the city’s public works department on the traffic matters.
