Traffic advisory issued for Sunday
Streets closed and parking prohibited around race finish line in Charlottetown
Motorists are asked to use extra caution when travelling in and around Charlottetown this weekend.
The 16th annual Prince Edward Island Marathon Weekend takes place Friday, Oct. 18 to Sunday, Oct. 20, meaning street closures and traffic tieups as the runners make their way around the routes.
Runners in the full marathon begin near the Brackley entrance of the P.E.I. National Park, entering the city via the Confederation Trail at Brackley Point Road.
They turn onto Sherwood Road, then to Malpeque Road and onto University Avenue continuing on Great George Street to the finish line, between Kent and Grafton streets.
The half marathon, 10-kilometre run, wheelchair and children categories take place mainly in city limits, starting on Grafton Street at Queen Street and travelling through the Brighton and Belvedere Avenue areas.
Anyone looking to access the Charlottetown Airport from Malpeque Road are encouraged to use John Yeo Drive/ MacAleer Drive or the arterial highway as a detour route instead of the Sherwood Road during the road closures in this area.
Sherwood Road, between Brackley Point Road and Route 2/Malpeque Road and University Avenue, between Kirkwood Drive and Grafton Street, will be closed to motorists on Sunday from 9 a.m. until approximately 3 p.m.
The following streets will be closed on Sunday just after midnight until 3 p.m. or the event conclusion to accommodate the finish area and ensure the safety of all participants: Grafton Street from Church Street to Queen Street, and Great George Street from Euston Street to Grafton Street.
Euston Street (eastbound), between Terry Fox Drive to University Avenue/ Great George Street will be closed from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
And traffic will be delayed due to a heavy number of participants on Malpeque Road/University Avenue at the following intersections - perimeter highway, Belvedere Avenue and Allen Street/Kirkwood Drive.
Access will be limited on to University Avenue south of Kirkwood Drive/ Allen Street between 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
There will be no parking from midnight until approximately 3 p.m. Sunday on Great George Street from Fitzroy Street to Grafton Street and Grafton Street from Great George Street to Queen Street.
Vehicles left within the finish line area will be towed to accommodate setup beginning at 1 a.m. on Sunday morning.
Spectators are encouraged to come to the finish line on the corner of Great George Street and Grafton Street to cheer on all participants from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
