P.E.I. Symphony Oct. 20
Concert features Jean Sibelius’s ‘Symphony No. 4’ and Maurice Ravel’s ‘Mother Goose Suite’
The P.E.I. Symphony’s 52nd season launches this weekend with their opening concert “The Gathering Storm”.
This concert features Jean Sibelius’s Symphony No. 4 and Maurice Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite. These works respond in opposite ways to the looming threat of the First World War.
Also on the program is Canadian composer John Estacio’s new Trumpet Concerto. Cocommissioned by the PEISO, the concerto will be performed by Montreal trumpet virtuoso, Paul Merkelo.
The season’s opening concert takes place in the sanctuary of Zion Presbyterian Church at 135 Prince St., Charlottetown, on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 2:30 p.m.
The season continues Nov. 24 at 2:30 p.m. in the Homburg Theatre with “Space & The Rocket”, featuring Gustav Holst’s massive The Planets. Because the music is so recognizable, The Planets has become an all-time classical favourite. Also on the November program, Abigail RichardsonSchulte’s ever-lively The Hockey Sweater, which will be narrated by P.E.I.’s own Patrick Ledwell.
The collective performance of these works makes this concert ideal for the entire family.
The first concert of 2020 entitled “True North” will take place on March 1 at Zion Presbyterian Church.
This concert features upand-coming conductor Mélanie Léonard, who will present an afternoon of all-Canadian masterpieces. Léonard has selected to perform works by composers Peter Charles Allen, Sid Robinovitch, Jocelyn Morlock and Alice Ping Yee Ho. A performance by our young artist Suzanne Brenton Award winner, horn player Justin Amador, rounds out the afternoon’s delights.
The final concert of the season, “Copland and Rachmaninoff” takes place on April 19 at the Confederation Centre of the Arts.
Two masterworks conclude the season: Aaron Copland’s ever- popular Symphony No. 3 which features the familiar theme from his Fanfare for the Common Man and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3, which will be passionately and imaginatively performed by the Island’s Sarah Hagen.
