HILLSBOROUGH BRIDGE TRAFFIC SOLUTIONS

-

After witnessing the recent traffic problems on the Hillsborough Bridge caused by the sewer pipe installation construction, I wrote to Transportation Minister Steven Myers on Oct. 25 to suggest immediate measures for reducing vehicle traffic on the bridge, especially while that construction is proceeding.

I asked if consideration has been given to actions such as: increasing the number of buses crossing the bridge and reducing the bus fares, encouraging biking and walking across the bridge (instead of the present discouragement measures), giving incentives for car pooling, and, at the very least, doing a public education campaign to make sure those who use the bridge can share ideas and be aware of their options. (Stratford town officials have since told me that they are distributing an educational flyer to their residents on bridge traffic options.)

This construction period would also seem to be the sensible time to install the bicycle/pedestrian lane on the bridge, and to fix the approaches on each end so cyclists and pedestrians can feel safe when they cross the bridge.

I asked Minister Myers for a prompt reply but I have not received any (as of Saturday). I haven't heard of any traffic reduction actions being taken by provincial government officials, but hopefully if enough people demand action, our leaders will listen.
