Hurricane men lose to Mounties, Holland College women’s squad picks up win

The Holland College Hurricanes men’s basketball team’s win streak is over.

The seven-time defending Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n (ACAA) champs dropped a 93-67 decision Saturday to the Mount Allison Mounties in Sackville, N.B. It was their first loss in conference play in 38 games. The ’Canes last loss came Nov. 26, 2017, at Crandall when the Chargers won 108-103 by outscoring the visitors 29-22 in the final quarter.

The ’Canes led 16-14 after the first quarter but fell behind 39-36 at the half and went to the fourth trailing 69-50.

Jordan Holness dropped 33 points for the Hurricanes, while getting eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Xavier Starks came off the bench with 16 points and four rebounds.

The Mounties (3-2) are tied for second while Holland College (2-1) is in fourth place.

Holland College was 2-for-17 from three-point territory and 9-for-18 at the free-throw line.

The ’Canes women earned a 75-54 win.

Ashley Plaggenhoe­f and Aki Kobayashi each had 18 points to lead the ’Canes while Sophie Atkinson added 16 points and nine rebounds. Plaggenhoe­f hauled in seven rebounds and dished out three assists while Kobayashi had six boards and seven dimes.

Danielle McKinnon chipped in with eight points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals for Holland College while Kassandra Little had seven points and nine rebounds.

The Hurricanes held quarter leads of 18-13, 41-24 and 6439. They improve to 2-1 and sit in a three-way tie for third place in the ACAA standings. The Mounties (1-5) are in sixth place.

The ’Canes return to the court Saturday when they host the St. Thomas Tommies at 1 p.m. (women) and 3 p.m. (men).
