UPEI victorious in hockey, basketball while men drop Saturday games

Halifax’s Jenna Pellerin scored the first hat trick of her Atlantic University Sport (AUS) career Saturday to help the UPEI Panthers defeat the St. Thomas Tommies 5-1 in women’s hockey.

The Panthers held 2-0 and 3-1 period leads before Pellerin scored shorthande­d 6:27 into the third and completed the hat trick five minutes later. The fourth-year forward doubled her goal output on the season and now has six goals and 16 points in 21 games.

Katelynn Nice on the power play and Kaylee Dufresne also scored in the win at MacLauchla­n Arena. Delaney Boehm had two assists while singles went to Sophie Vandale, Nice, Taylor Gillis, captain Rachel Colle, Kristen MacIntyre and Maria Clinton.

Mariah Carey scored a power-play goal for St. Thomas with assists to Paige Jackson and Danielle Ring.

Camille Scherger stopped 21 shots for the win while Marandee Hunter made 20 saves in the loss. UPEI was 1-for-2 on the power play while St. Thomas was 1-for-5.

The Panthers improved to 16-4-1 while St. Thomas is 1011-1.

UPEI travelled to Halifax for an afternoon game with Dalhousie. Results were unavailabl­e at press time.

MEN’S HOCKEY

Former Charlottet­own Islanders goalie Blade MannDixon made 26 saves to backstop the St. FX X-Men to a 4-2 victory over the Panther Saturday in men’s hockey action.

It included stopping Nathan Yetman on a first period penalty shot at MacLauchla­n Arena.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period and Troy Lajeunesse gave the home side the lead about nine minutes into the second period.

But Bryson Cianfrone and Regan Spears scored 14 seconds apart to give the visitors a 3-2 lead heading to the third. Matthew Graham and Jeremiah Addison rounded out the scoring for the visitors.

Conor MacEachern had the Panthers first goal while Simon Hofley took the loss in the Panthers crease.

St. FX improved to 10-11-3, four points up on UPEI (8-12-3) for fifth place in the seven-team conference standings.

The Panthers host Acadia Friday and Saint Mary’s Saturday during alumni weekend. Both games start at 7 p.m.

BASKETBALL WOMEN

Jenna Mae Ellsworth and Reese Baxendale combined for 43 points Saturday to lead the

Panthers to a 62-57 road victory over the Cape Breton Capers in women’s basketball.

The game was worth four points in the standings.

Ellsworth had 22 points, six rebounds, four steals, three assists and a steal while Baxendale had 21 points, three steals, two rebounds and two dimes. Carolina Del Santo had a team-high 12 rebounds.

MacKenzee Ryan had a gamehigh 24 points for the Capers while Audrey Rankin had 13 rebounds.UPEI held quarter leads of 16-14, 37-28 and 50-44.

The Panthers shot better from the field (34-30 per cent) and the free-throw line (85-54) while the Capers did better from behind the arc (40-31).

UPEI improved to 9-2 while Cape Breton is 3-8. The Panthers host the St. FX X-Women Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m.

MEN

Osman Omar had a gamehigh 25 points to lead the Capers to a 76-66 win over the Panthers in men’s basketball.

Cooper Ward (14 points and 11 rebounds) and Paul Watson (13 rebounds and 12 points) each had double-doubles for the Capers in the home victory.

Elijah Miller had 21 points, five assists and four rebounds to lead the Panthers while Jamesley Jerome had 11 points and 11 rebounds and Jack MacAulay scored 14 points against his former team. Magdi Tiea chipped in 10 rebounds.

Cape Breton led 18-13 after the first quarter but trailed 29-28 at the half. The Capers outscored the Panthers 24-11 to take a 52-40 lead to the fourth quarter.

The home side held a slight advantage from the field (41-40 per cent) and from three-point territory (33-32 per cent). The Panthers shot better from the free-throw line (73-64 per cent) but made 17 fewer trips to the line. Cape Breton improved to 5-6 while UPEI (2-9) dropped its fourth straight game and sits in the basement of the eightteam league.

The Panthers host the St. FX X-Men Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m.
