Cape Breton hands Charlottet­own Islanders two losses

Liam Kidney and Felix Lafrance each had three-point nights as the Cape Breton Eagles thumped the Charlottet­own Islanders 8-2 Saturday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.

The win completed the weekend sweep of games at the Eastlink Centre after the Eagles won 5-2 on Friday. Cape Breton (26-14-2-1) now leads Charlottet­own (23-18-5-0) by four points.

Cape Breton, which held 3-0 and 5-2 period leads on Saturday, went 3-for-8 on the power play and killed all three of the Charlottet­own’s chances with the man advantage.

Kidney had two goals and an assist while Lafrance had a goal and two assists while veterans Jarrett Baker, Shawn Element and Egor Sokolov each tallied a goal and an assist.

Captain Derek Gentile, a former Isles forward, and Ryan

Francis also scored in the win.

Tyler Hinam, who won the Memorial Cup a year ago with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, had three assists while St. Louis draft pick Mathias Laferriere had two and singles went to Adam McCormick, Jeremy Langlois and Kyle Havlena.

Rookies Will Trudeau and Justin Gill scored for Charlottet­own before 2,797 people at the Eastlink Centre with assists to rookies Oscar Plandowski and Drew Elliott plus third-year centre Nikita Alexandrov.

Kevin Mandolese stopped 34 shots for the victory as Cape Breton improved to 9-1-0-0 in its last 10 games. Matthew Welsh allowed five goals on 16 shots in 26:46 before giving way to rookie Jacob Goobie, who allowed three goals on 18 shots in relief.

The Islanders head to Saint John, N.B., to play the Sea Dogs on Friday while the Eagles host the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada on Thursday.
