Kensington earns victory on final day of showcase, Knights turn in another strong performanc­e against league leading Flyers

Prince Edward Island’s two teams went a combined 1-3 at the first New Brunswick/ Prince Edward Island Major Midget Hockey League Showcase in Kensington during the weekend.

The host Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild rebounded Sunday for a 7-4 victory over the Fredericto­n Caps after opening the sixteam tournament with a 4-3 loss to the Northern Moose on Saturday.

The Charlottet­own Bulk Carriers Knights turned in a strong performanc­e Sunday in losing 3-2 to the first-place Moncton Flyers after dropping a 5-0 decision to the Saint John Vitos on opening day.

Here’s a recap of the four games.

SUNDAY WILD 7, CAPS 4

Keiran Gallant had a goal and three assists Sunday to lead the Wild to a 7-4 victory over the Caps.

Alex Graham and Dixon MacLeod each scored twice in the victory while Reid Peardon and Donovan Arsenault also scored. Austin Arsenault had two assists while singles were credited to Will Proud, Isaac Vos, Reid Vos, Sam MacNeill, Kalib Snow, Landon Clow and Donovan Arsenault.

Dawson Breau, Jeremie Thibodeau, Noah Gibbs and Cam Thomson scored for Fredericto­n. Joshua Nadeau set up three of the goals.

Josh Smith made 20 saves for the victory while Matthew Parker stopped 24 shots in the loss.

Kensington held 2-1 and 5-3 period leads. The Wild was 1-for-8 on the power play and killed all seven of the Caps chances with the man advantage. The Wild improved to 20-11-3 while the Caps are 17-17-1. Kensington hosted the Northern Moose (13-17-4) Monday in a makeup game. Results were unavailabl­e at press time.

FLYERS 3, KNIGHTS 2

Flyers blue-liner Jonathan Desrosiers scored the winner with 3:02 left in the third period Sunday in a 3-2 win over the Knights in the final game of the showcase.

Dominic LeBlanc and Alexis Daniel gave the Flyers a 2-0 lead in the second period. Simon Hughes and Kal White tied the game in the third for the Knights.

Samuel Savoie had two assists for Moncton while Daniel, Coen Strang and Braeden MacPhee each chipped in one.

Cameron MacLean had the lone helper for the Knights.

Nicholas Sheehan made 21 saves for the victory while Aiden Williams stopped 26 shots in the loss.

Moncton was 1-for-4 on the power play and killed all four of the Knights chances with the man advantage.

The first-place Flyers improved to 33-3-2 while the last-place Knights are 11-19-5.

SATURDAY VITOS 5, KNIGHTS 0

Carter McCluskey and Trey Hatt each scored twice to pace the Vito’s to a 5-0 victory while Jake Kyle added one. Jack Dickie had three helpers in the victory as Saint John led 3-0 after the first period and scored two more in the third.

Jeremi Delaquis turned in a 24-save shutout while Jack Howatt stopped 21 shots in the loss.

MOOSE 4, WILD 3

Anthony Parent scored the winner with 51 seconds remaining in regulation as the Moose defeated the Wild 4-3.

Jake Parker, Marc-Andre Gaudet and Simon Olivier Savoie also scored in the victory. Peardon scored twice for Kensington while Donovan Arsenault had a goal and an assist.

Gallant, playing his first game of the season with the Wild after starting the year in major junior with the Charlottet­own Islanders, had two helpers. Gallant broke his collarbone in mid-November. Crosby Andrews and Clow also chipped in an assist.

Pierre-Vincent Guignard stopped 29 shots for the victory while Jonah Arbing made 22 saves in the loss.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first while Northern took a 3-1 lead to the third.
