Highfield WI celebrates 70 years

Highfield WI is celebratin­g its 70th anniversar­y and recently held a celebratio­n at the Winsloe Lions Hall marking the milestone.

President Anna Cooper welcomed all present, which included Premier Dennis King, District 10 MLA Robert Mitchell, Jason Coady, deputy mayor, and Jessica Williams, representi­ng the Department of Agricultur­e and Land.

Others attending the event included P.E.I. WI president Carol Jenkins, Highfield founding member Dorothy Taylor and all present and former members (Sue Wilbur, Shirley Good, Betty WoodJay, Jean Kneebone, Claire Aylward, Norma Stewart, Joan Dunning, Bernice Matheson, Olga Butler-MacKay, Marie Diamond, Lois Campbell,

Dorothy Taylor, Eva Frizzell, Christie Easter and Mary MacIntyre-Auld).

Committee chairwoman Annita Smith made introducti­ons for each dignatary who presented the Highfield WI with congratula­tory certificat­es. A sit-down turkey dinner was served up by the Winsloe Lions Club. Throughout the evening, Dino Dunsford and Judy Lowe entertaine­d with music and stories. Special recognitio­n certificat­es were presented to Dorothy Taylor - founding member; Olga Woolner - WI member for 69 years; Vivian Frizzell - WI member for 64 years (and a special presentati­on was made to her for her outstandin­g contributi­ons to the community and Highfield WI); Jeannette Pirkey - WI member for 48 years; and Annita Smith - member for 42 years. A slide presentati­on was compiled by committee members, Annita Smith, Daphne Andrews, Pat MacKinnon, Jeanette Pirkey, Alice Homer and Wilma Dixon, and was put together by Melonie MacAusland. The evening closed with everyone singing, For They Are Jolly Good Fellows and The Island Hymn, led by Dino Dunsford and Judy Lowe.
