Chevies win in extra innings

O’Shea, MacDougall, Gallant, Coffin play key roles as Morell gets by Tigers

Pitcher Logan Gallant turned a comebacker into a 1-2-3 double play to escape a basesloade­d jam and preserve a 5-2 win in nine innings for the Morell Chevies.

The Kings County Baseball League victory over the Grant Thornton Tigers occurred recently at Memorial Field.

The game was tied 1-1 through seven innings as starting pitchers Troy Coffin (Chevies) and Jordan Stevenson (Tigers) held the opposition in check.

After a scoreless eighth inning, the teams started the ninth with runners on first and second base.

Nathan Jones opened the top of the ninth with a runscoring double to right field before Logan MacDougall cashed two more with a single and Cole MacLaren plated a fourth with a ground out.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Tigers got hits from Johnny Savidant and an RBI single from Bret Cheverie before Gallant got the doubleplay ball to close out the game.

The Chevies opened the scoring in the first inning when Gallant reached on an infield single and scored on a Stephen O’Shea double.

The Tigers responded in the second inning with Savidant, who led off the inning with a single, scoring on a Brad Mullen single.

O’Shea went 2-for-4 with an RBI double to lead the Chevies’ offence while Jones was 1-for-4 with an RBI double and MacDougall went 1-for-4 with two RBI.

Savidant was 3-for-4 with a run to pace the Tigers’ offence. Cheverie was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI and Mullen went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Gallant earned the win, allowing an unearned run on two hits and striking out three in two innings of relief. Coffin gave up a run on five hits and a walk while striking out three in seven innings. Tyler Johnston was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs on three hits and a walk in two innings of relief. Stevenson, the ace for the Charlottet­own Gaudet’s Auto Body Islanders senior team for years, gave up a run on six hits and struck in eight in seven innings of work
