A Charlottetown man who rolled his vehicle onto the Confederation Trail while driving drunk was recently fined $2,000.

Bin Wang, 47, appeared before Judge Jeff Lantz in provincial court in Charlottetown where he pleaded guilty to impaired driving.

Crown attorney Jeff MacDonald told the court that on May 14 at around 12:50 a.m., Wang failed to stop at an intersection and his vehicle rolled onto the trail nearby causing damage to his vehicle.

Wang later provided breathalyzer samples that were around twice the legal limit.

Defence lawyer Sean Corcoran said Wang knows he made a stupid decision that night.

Corcoran also said Wang donated 300 pieces of personal protective equipment that was given to frontline workers earlier this year.

Wang had respiratory issues, his wife has health problems and the accused was worried about getting COVID-19 in jail, Corcoran said.

Given the submissions and a bed shortage at the jail, Lantz did not give Wang the usual jail time for a first offence.

He fined Wang $2,000 and ordered him to pay a $600 victim surcharge.

Wang is banned from driving for one year.
