Winter parking restrictions in effect
Winter parking restrictions are now in effect in Charlottetown.
The traffic bylaw states that parking restrictions are in place from Nov. 15 to April 15 annually. Anyone parking on city streets during these months between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. is taking a risk of being ticketed and/or towed.
The city’s public works department and police services work as a team to enforce the winter parking restrictions only when de-icing and/or snow clearing is required. Residents will be notified on days the restrictions are being enforced using the Charlottetown alert system to issue a snow alert. This information is also shared on the city’s social media accounts. Signing up for the alert system is free, but subscription based, and individuals must choose how they wish to receive messages, such as by phone, text or email.
Register for the snow alert or edit an existing account by visiting Charlottetown.ca.
The winter parking restrictions also apply to residential parking permit holders.
The public is encouraged to use off-street parking when the snow alert is activated to avoid the potential for a ticket and/or being towed. In the downtown, the Charlottetown Area Development Corporation (CADC) owns and operates two outdoor parking lots. CADC permits the public to use these lots, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., during the winter. For details, visit cadcpei.com.
The Holland College staff parking lot on Fitzroy Street next to ADL Ltd., may also be used as an off-street parking alternative during parking restrictions, 8 p.m. to 7:30 a.m., but users do so at their own risk and must exit the lot by 7:30 a.m. or risk being ticketed/towed. The city parkades offer free parking on Saturdays and holidays. CADC also offers a park and ride service from its Grafton Street lot to the downtown.
