Steel drum workshops announced
Six-part series, to begin later this month, being offered by Pepeto Pinto
Professional player and steel drum maker Pepeto Pinto is offering a series of six workshops for those interested in learning how to play this musical instrument from the Caribbean.
The training, which will take place through the Fédération culturelle de l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard's development program, will allow participants to develop the techniques necessary to learn how to play and properly handle steel drums. Workshops will be every second Thursday starting Feb. 18 (6 p.m.) at the Carrefour de l'Isle-Saint-Jean in Charlottetown.
Equipment (steel drums) will be provided to participants, as required, for the duration of the workshops.
The workshops are for individuals 12 years of age and older; admission is charged. Space is limited, and those interested must reserve a place in advance by contacting FCÎPÉ at 902-439-0302 or germain.fcipe@gmail.com. Also, participants must follow the COVID-19 prevention measures that will be in place for the workshop and must wear a mask.
Originally from Jamaica, Pinto's musical journey began in high school when traditional steel drums were introduced into the school curriculum. He studied at the Edna Manley School of Music in Kingston, Jamaica. From there, he pursued a career playing professionally in Jamaica's major tourist centres. To broaden his musical experience, he formed his own band, Versonic Vibes, who have performed with some of the country's top musicians. Now a resident of Charlottetown, Pinto has been teaching and building steel musical instruments by hand for over 10 years and has a deep love for the sound of metal.
