What: Accessible Transportation Rebate Program: A P.E.I. program to help offset the costs of wheelchair-accessible vehicles. The province announced $95,000 for the program in March, and the City of Charlottetown committed $5,000 for this year to it on Tuesday. It will be administered by the P.E.I. Council of People with Disabilities.

Who: Transportation operators can apply for rebates to cover 20 per cent of costs to a maximum of $10,000 for both vehicle and equipment purchases. It means the program could fund rebates for at least 10 vehicles.

Training: Pat and the Elephant officials will provide free training to taxi operators.

Eligibility: Taxi and ride-sharing companies must be incorporated to do business in Prince Edward Island. Recipients must agree to maintain and operate the vehicle for a five-year period and preference will be given to new vehicle purchases. Operators who have used vehicles more than five years old with fewer than 60,000 km are also eligible to apply.

To apply: Call the P.E.I. Council of People with Disabilities at 902-8929149.
