How the Western Red Wings are remembering Alex Hutchinson:

• The team retired Hutchinson’s number in a pre-game ceremony before the team’s home opener in November. A banner with Hutchinson’s No. 14 with Forever a Red Wing under the number hangs in the Evangeline Recreation Centre. Hutchinson is the first player in franchise history to have his number retired since the Red Wings relocated to Abram-Village from Tyne Valley for the 2011-12 season.

• The Red Wings placed Hutchinson’s jersey behind the bench for every game during the 2020-21 season.

• Hutchinson’s stall remains intact in the team’s dressing room along with the puck for his first Island Junior Hockey League goal.

“Everything is still in his stall,” said Red Wings captain Chandler Wood. “It’s a beautiful tribute, and he doesn’t deserve anything less. Everybody in the room talks highly of him, and that’s the way it should be because he was a phenomenal kid.”

• The Red Wings and Hutchinson family recently presented the inaugural Alex Hutchinson Memorial Award to Connor Morrissey. The players vote for the recipient of this award, which goes to a player who demonstrates a team-first attitude, strong work ethic, leadership and love for hockey.

“To know that my teammates think of me in that way and to know I made one of my best friends proud, it meant a lot to me (to receive the award),” said Morrissey. “I can’t put into words how much it meant.”
