Provincial funding for two P.E.I. community groups will help them address the needs of some of Prince Edward Island’s most vulnerable people.

The P.E.I. Department of Social Development and Housing announced $100,000 for the Boys and Girls Club of Summerside, who have partnered with the LifeHouse Group, to purchase a new house to be used as a women’s shelter in Summerside.

The department also announced $78,000 in funding to support the Boys and Girls Club of Summerside’s Project Backpack, a food security program that provides grocery packages to families.

Ted Lockie, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of Charlottetown, said they offer Project Backpack because the food will help Charlottetown families ensure children develop healthily.

“We are delighted to have the support of the province in delivering this food and security program to Islanders in need as one part of the large plan to address poverty on P.E.I.,” said Lockie.

The funds set aside for Project Backpack will subsidize weekly grocery packages for families, reducing the pressures of food insecurity.

“The community support that they provide to people is essential, and these funds will allow them to continue their great work in supporting Islanders who need it most,” said Social Development and Housing Minister Brad Trivers.

The $100,000 for Life House comes from Reaching Home, whose mandate is reducing Canadian homelessness. The John Howard Society of P.E.I. oversees Reaching Home’s projects on the Island.
